The British Standard for
gunsafes is BS7558/92. Purchasers of gunsafes should be aware that
Home Office Guidance states that new cabinets should conform to the
requirements of BS7558. It is possible for a manufacturer to claim
that their product is built to the British Standard, without ever
subjecting it to an independent test.
Every Brattonsound gunsafe range has been independently tested to
BS7558/92. This means that an independent test-house has ensured that
our designs conform to the British Standard. They did this by attempting,
under controlled conditions, to break into sample gunsafes from each
range in order remove a simulated weapon. As they were unable to remove
the simulated weapons from our gunsafes in the time allowed, they
are deemed to conform to the standard.

Brattonsound recommends that when buying a gunsafe you look for
one that has been independently tested to British Standard BS7558/92,
as this is the only way to guarantee that your gunsafe will be accepted
by the police. As the costs of getting a gunsafe tested are relatively
modest, it is possible that any manufacturer that hasn’t had
their gunsafes tested to BS7558 hasn’t done so as they are
concerned that their product might fail.
A requirement of the British Standard is that the gunsafe is marked
as conforming to BS7558. Therefore, if it doesn’t say it on
the gunsafe it doesn’t conform to the British Standard.
Under certain circumstances some non British Standard cabinets are
accepted but we would never make one. The reason is simple - as
a responsible manufacturer we want our customers to have the very
best chance of having their gunsafes accepted not just now, but
well into the future, each and every time their licences are renewed
and their gunsafes are re-inspected.
